Without Another Word

They were very comfortable walking by
The house we were visiting just the other day
At the time I was outside about to say
My final and necessary goodbyes.
They came round the turn of the hill
Walking slowly, softly in a single line
Led by one of their number merely first
Of them all.  Pausing she looked in my direction
Turned her head to those behind as if to
Indicate I was there, and continued.  They paused too,
Each in turn looking straight at me, gracefully
Accepting my intrusive presence with noble
Dignity.  My hostess noticing their notice
Of me, commented

Without Another Word

Without Another Word

how peaceful it was.
I took their picture and they walked on
Without another word.
